What is anthrax?
Anthrax is a highly-dangerous and virulent disease found mainly in animals and livestock. It is caused by the bacterium bacillus anthracis and is classified as a zoonosis. This means that the disease can be transferred from animals to humans. The bacterium is most commonly transferred through the skin, or by ingesting or inhaling.
Why is anthrax a hazardous material?
The anthrax bacterium is incredibly hardy, to the extent that animal products used in building materials can still carry spores. Whilst no longer common, houses built in the 19th century could well have animal material – often horsehair – in the mortar. As the mortar crumbles, the anthrax spores could potentially be released, with disastrous consequences for any inhabitants.
What are the symptoms of anthrax?
Symptoms vary, depending on how the bacterium is taken on. If through an opening in the skin, it presents itself as a skin lesion, rather like a large, black boil. If inhaled into the lungs, it results in heavy flu-like symptoms, as blood collects in the lungs, making breathing difficult. Ingested bacteria produce abdominal pains, diarrhoea, and vomiting.
What should I do if I have anthrax in my property?
The moment you suspect your premises to contain anthrax or you are planning any refurbishment or demolition works and your premises was built prior to 1919 should be subject to an anthrax survey, The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 & The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM) stipulates a legal duty to introduce control measures to minimise any health risks to staff or those involved in the construction industry. get in touch with clarity-ECL. Anthrax surveys
Our first step is to undertake an anthrax survey or sampling as directed by the client
The surveyor will take representative samples of suspected materials into a label bag to be sealed to prevent any form of contamination and taken to a UKAS Accredited Laboratory. Once the samples have been analyzed the client will be provided with a certification of results.
Anthrax testing
The samples taken during the site visit are labeled and doubled bagged, There are then sent to an independent UKAS accredited laboratory where they are incubated and cultured over a 10 day period in order to conclude whether any of the samples contain anthrax.
