What is lead paint?

Lead paint (sometimes called lead-based paint) describes several different products used for both internal and external decoration. At its simplest, it is literally any paint that contains lead, though different products include it for different reasons. Some paints utilise lead as a pigment, while others use it as a drying agent, or to protect against corrosion.

Why is lead paint a hazardous material?

The paint itself, properly applied and intact, is not dangerous. The problem comes some years after application, when it begins to flake, crumble, and peel. The paint flakes turn into a metallic dust that can travel on the air. This dust is easily ingested or inhaled by both adults and children, resulting in lead poisoning.

What are the symptoms of lead poisoning?

Lead poisoning can be potentially lethal and is extremely dangerous to children and adults alike. In children it can cause stunted growth and delayed development. In adults it can cause reproductive problems, including decreased sperm production. Across all ages, symptoms can include damage to the nervous system and kidney damage, even from ingesting minute amounts.

What should I do if I have lead paint in my property?

The first thing you need to do is contact Clarity-ECL who’s trained and qualified experience surveyors. We will not only confirm the presence of lead paint, but also how hazardous it is in its current state. The lead paint can then either be repaired and encapsulated to prevent further deterioration, or removed entire.
